Week 5 (24/03/25)

This was the fifth week of my Egyptian Weapon project. At the start of this week I decided to change up the way I was doing the project and to model the last two weapons together and then texture them both. This week I have modelled both the Spear and the Mace. I also made some changes to the Khopesh texture. Here is an image of the models inside of MAYA. For the spear I have tried to design it around the theme of beetles and scorpions. These bugs are commonly seen in Egypt and I thought the shapes they have could be interesting to use in a model. The spear head is similar to that of a pincer or a stinger. I added spikes to emulate the legs and a pole that would be use to push the spear head onto the shaft. I used similar grips to the staff, I added two as the spear would be wielded with two hands to thrust towards the enemy. I added a simple spike to the bottom end that would be used as another way to harm the enemy. For the mace, I used the spike from the spear on the top and the bot...

This week has also gone smoothly. I have sculpted the the Khopesh inside of Nomad Sculpt, baked the information onto the low poly in Substance Painter, and then textured the model. Here is an image of the high poly in Nomad Sculpt. I sculpted the high poly in a similar way to the staff. For the pommel and the guard I added some slight wear to the edges and some small details. I created a similar, but different, wrap for the handle. I planned to make the blade a sandstone material so I added cracks coming from the chipped sections and and some deep scratches. Along the unsharpened part of the blade I made it bumpy and unpolished. For the texture I baked the information from the high poly onto the low poly, in Substance Painter. I turned the material I created for the staffs connectors into a smart material. I then used this material for the guard and the pommel, after making some adjustments for it to better fit the Khopesh. I did this for multiple reasons, the main one is continuity be...

Week 3 (10/03/25)

This was the third week of my Egyptian weapon project. Progress this week has been smooth and in line with my expectations. I have fully textured the staff and have begun creating my next model. Here is an image of the textured staff. I am really happy with how the texture of the spear turned out. I was worried as it was mentioned that the staff may be too thin to make it stylised, but I decided to challenge myself and give it a go anyway. I started by creating the material for the connectors. I wanted to create a rough iron material. I gave it a dark metal base with a lighter shinier wear. I used a metal edge generator, that I adjusted, to add the wear. I used the clouds map and a slope blur with multiple colours to add a blotchy look to the metal. I did the same for the gold Ankh, but I also adjusted the roughness levels to make the shine change when you look at it at different positions. For the grip I used multiple shades of red and added a lighter tone to the edges to make the bak...

Week 2 (03/03/25)

This week was the second week of my Egyptian weapon project. I have made some really good progress this week. As of this moment, I have modelled the staff and then put it into an app called Nomad Sculpt. This app is similar to ZBrush, but works with android tablets. I used this app to sculpt the high poly version of my model, which I then decimated to a reasonable level. Here is an image of the modelled staff inside of MAYA. The model is made up 6 main parts, these are: 1. The Ankh at the top 2. The Ankh to Shaft Connector 3. The Shaft 4. The Grip 5. The Shaft to Blade Connector 6. The Blade at the bottom Here is an image of the high poly version of the staff inside of Nomad Sculpt. On the high poly I have sculpted lots of minor details all over the model. I created a wrap that goes round the grip, as if it was wrapped with a fabric. On the steel parts I added some slight wear to the edges and some dings/scratches. I plan to make the Ankh look like it's made of gold and, because it...

Week 1 (24/02/25) - Start

This week is the first of my fourth project for my honours module at UCLan. For this project I wanted to make something more colourful and stylised, compared to what I have created so far. I decided to stick with a similar theme as my last project and look at ancient weapons. After debating on which region to base my project on, I chose to create stylised weapons from ancient Egypt. I spent this week researching and created a mood board of the type of weapons that I wanted to make. The weapons I decided to make are: 1. A Khopesh - This is a type of axe-sword. 2. A Mace - A bludgeoning weapon that is usually made of a large rounded stone on the end of a handle. 3. A Spear - Usually made of copper, these were one of the most common types of weapon available. 4. A Staff - This isn't really a weapon but fits with the stylised theme and I believe would make a good addition as the ancient Egyptians were very religious and I would be able to add a lot of symbolism to the staff. This is th...
